Knight games Mönsheim — medieval festival at Reitschule Popp
The medieval knight games in Mönsheim: tournament, market and family programme at Reitschule Popp's Grenzbachhof — a day trip from the Northern Black Forest.
Mönsheim lies south of the Biet in the Enz district — about half an hour by car from Das Bollenhut Haus. Once a year the riding school's Grenzbachhof becomes a stage: for nearly 20 years Reitschule Popp has hosted the Medieval Knight Games — from an in-house celebration to a regional May weekend.
Across two days in May (2026: 16 and 17 May) tournament riding meets market stalls and entertainment. The arena features ring jousting, Roland riding and mounted quadrilles; jugglers, musicians and amateur theatre with knights on horseback fill the gaps. An ongoing saga around King Martinus of Weißenstein ties the shows together — including the Black Knight the crowd loves to boo.
Around the arena: medieval camp life, craft stalls, food and drink — wooden swords for children, a relaxed day for adults. The indoor arena is a wet-weather fallback. Organiser hours are typically Sat about 11 am–midnight, Sun about 11 am–6 pm — check reitschule-popp.de before visiting.
A good May outing from the Northern Black Forest between forest calm and something different — grounded festival at a real riding school, not theme-park kitsch. Admission and programme may change yearly; Reitschule Popp, Mühlpfad 1, 71297 Mönsheim.
